AI Answering Service for Roofers: Storm Calls, Leaks and Insurance Callers

An AI answering service for roofers picks up every call, day or night, tells the caller it is an AI assistant, and books the job. Riot Digital sets one up for Minnesota and Wisconsin roofers. It texts you a summary, texts back missed callers in seconds, and can send emergency calls to a human you choose.

After hail or a wind event, your phone rings all at once. You are on a roof, or in a truck, or already booked solid. The homeowner with water coming through the ceiling will not wait for a callback. This page is for the roofer comparing answering services. It shows what happens on eight roofing calls, gives you a worksheet to price a storm week of missed calls, and lists what ours costs. For the text-back side alone, read missed call text back for roofers.

One rule first: emergency calls go to a human

Some roofing calls are not about shingles. A tree through the roof, a person hurt, or a smell of gas or smoke is a 911 call first. So we write an emergency rule with you and test it before the line takes a live call. A sample setup:

  • If a caller says someone is hurt, or mentions fire, smoke, a gas smell or a downed line, the AI can tell them to get to safety and call 911, and to call the utility about a downed line.
  • The call can be set to go to a human on your list.
  • The AI is not set up to give repair or structural advice. It does not say whether a roof is safe to walk under.

You set who the human is. A person decides what happens next.

What an AI answering service does, call by call

These are scenarios, not promises. Your shop's rules decide what happens on each one.

CallWhat voicemail doesWhat the AI front desk doesGoes to a human?
Active leak after a stormCaller hears a greeting and hangs up, then calls the next roofer.Asks the address, where the water is coming in, and whether anyone is in danger. Books the next slot or marks it urgent by the rules you set.Only if there is any danger sign, or your rules say so.
Tree or limb through the roofA message sits until you check it.Asks if anyone is hurt. If yes, it follows the emergency rule. If no, it takes address and callback and marks the job urgent. Can be set to yes.
Hail damage inspection requestA message you return tomorrow.Takes name, address, roof age if known, and the date of the storm. Books the inspection.No. You get a text with the lead.
Caller waiting on an insurance claimVoicemail. The caller keeps dialing roofers.Takes the address and what the caller shares about the claim. Books the inspection. Does not give claim advice or promise coverage. No, unless your rules say so.
Estimate follow-up callA message for the office.Takes the caller's name, address and which estimate they mean, and flags it for you.Per your rules.
Door-knocker told them to call youRings out.Takes the address and who sent them, then books the inspection.No.
Gutter or small repairA message you return tomorrow.Takes the address, what is wrong and a good time. Books the visit if you allow it.No.
Commercial flat roof leakRings out. A manager may call the next roofer.Takes company, site, contact and where it leaks. Follows your commercial rules: book first thing, or send to your on-call person.Per your rules.

Each call ends with a text summary to you.

Storm week missed-call cost worksheet

This is obvious math with your own numbers. Fill the blanks from your last storm week. Our free audit does the same count from your real call log.

LineWhat to put inYour number
ACalls that rang in a normal week____
BCalls that rang in the worst week after a storm____
CCalls you did not pick up in that storm week____
DOf those, how many left no voicemail (ask your phone carrier for the call log)____
EYour average ticket (repair, or the average of your jobs)$____
FShare of those callers who would have booked (be honest, start at 1 in 4)____
Cost of one storm weekC x F x E$____

Example with made-up round numbers, not a claim about any shop: 40 missed calls, 1 in 4 would have booked, average ticket $9,000. That is 40 x 0.25 x $9,000 = $90,000. Change the numbers to match your shop. Even if your average ticket is $400, as on our pricing page example, one booked job covers the monthly fee.

Why storm weeks break the phone

Hail and wind events bunch up your calls on a few days. That is context, not a statistic. Callers are also not loyal to the first number they dial.

CallRail surveyed 1,000 U.S. consumers and published the results on September 25, 2025. It found 42% say they leave a voicemail when a business does not answer, and 21% immediately call another business (CallRail, Sept 25, 2025). That is a survey of all consumers, not only roofing customers.

So most unanswered calls leave you no message. And a homeowner with an insurance claim open often calls two or three roofers. The one who picks up gets the inspection.

Out-of-town storm chasers: be the roofer who answers

After storms, homeowners are told to be careful about out-of-town contractors. Minnesota's Department of Commerce urges homeowners to ask contractors for ID and verify licenses online, and warns that out-of-state contractors may leave after the work, which makes it hard to get repairs fixed (KSTP, undated page, read October 23, 2026). The same story lists getting three estimates as a protective step.

You can use that. A local, licensed roofer who answers the phone and books the inspection looks like the safe choice. Some facts to put on your own site and in your script:

  • Minnesota. The Department of Labor and Industry says residential roofing companies must be licensed, and it offers a Check a License tool (Minnesota DLI, roofer license page, undated, read October 23, 2026).
  • Wisconsin. The Department of Safety and Professional Services has a dwelling contractor credential for contractors who pull building permits on one- and two-family homes, and a public license look-up to check someone's credential (Wisconsin DSPS, read October 23, 2026). Ask your own advisor what applies to your work.
  • Deductibles. A 2017 Minnesota DLI news release said state law bars contractors from paying a homeowner's insurance deductible or offering compensation as a reason to hire them (Minnesota DLI bulletin, June 12, 2017). Your AI front desk never offers this. It books the inspection.

If you give it your license number, the AI can share it with callers. It makes no legal claims for you.

Missed calls and web leads too

The phone is one door. The same front desk texts a missed caller within seconds and replies to web form leads right away. One caveat from our pricing page: call answering works in week one, but missed-call text-back turns on once carrier registration for your number clears, usually 1 to 3 weeks.

We do not name competitor prices here because we can't verify them for your area. Ask any human service for per-minute or per-call rates in writing. A human service can be a good fit if you want a person on every call. The trade-off is that you manage their script and read their messages. An AI front desk follows your rules and books the job.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI answering service for roofers?

It is a phone service that answers your calls with AI instead of voicemail. It collects the address and the roof problem, books the job, flags emergency calls to a human, and texts you a summary.

What does an AI answering service do on a storm leak call?

It can ask the address, where the water is coming in, and whether anyone is in danger. If someone is in danger it can tell the caller to call 911. It can be set to send the call to a human you choose.

How much does an AI answering service for roofers cost?

Riot Digital's Front Desk is $397 a month with a $497 setup, or $0 setup with a 3-month commitment. It covers up to 500 call minutes a month. The Office Manager is $797 a month with a $1,500 setup and up to 1,000 minutes.

Is an AI answering service better than voicemail for a roofer?

For most calls, yes. CallRail's survey of 1,000 U.S. consumers, published September 25, 2025, found 42% leave a voicemail when a business does not answer, and 21% immediately call another business. An AI picks up and books.

Can it help me win callers who are waiting on an insurance claim?

It can answer, take the address and the claim status the caller shares, and book an inspection. It does not give claim advice or promise coverage. A person on your team handles anything about the insurance company.

Does it work for roofers in Minnesota and Wisconsin?

Yes. Riot Digital is based in Prior Lake, Minnesota, and serves service businesses in both states. The script is built from your website and your service area.
