Missed Call Cost Calculator for Contractors: Job Value by Trade, 2026
Use this missed call cost calculator to see what unanswered calls may cost your shop each month. Pick your trade, enter how many calls you miss a week and how many of those callers would have booked, and the calculator shows the monthly and yearly revenue at risk, using the sourced job values below.
A missed call costs a contractor the value of the job that caller would have booked, which in the sources below ranges from $100 (low end of one-time pest control) to $12,000 (high end of central AC replacement). These are national price ranges from published cost guides we opened and read on October 22, 2026. We did not find Minnesota or Wisconsin specific price pages that met our standard for a linked source, so treat them as a starting point and swap in your own average ticket.
Missed call cost calculator
Missed call calculator (sample math)
Monthly revenue at risk: $0 Yearly revenue at risk: $0
Sample math only, not a forecast. Job values are national ranges from the sources on this page. Your numbers will differ.
Inputs: trade (prefills the midpoint job value from the table), average job value (editable), missed calls per week, booking rate %. Output: monthly and yearly revenue at risk.
The formula: missed calls per week x share that would have booked x average job value = weekly revenue at risk. Multiply by 52 for the year, and divide the year by 12 for a monthly figure.
Worked example (sample numbers, not a forecast): a plumbing shop misses 6 calls a week. Suppose 30% of those callers would have booked, and the average job is $350.
- 6 x 0.30 x $350 = $630 per week
- $630 x 52 = $32,760 per year
- $32,760 / 12 = $2,730 per month
Change any input and the answer changes. The booking share is yours to set, since it depends on your pricing, schedule and how the call is handled.
Job value by trade (calculator prefills)
| Trade | Typical job value range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| HVAC repair | $150 to $450 (major repairs such as a compressor: $1,300 to $2,500) | Housecall Pro, HVAC pricing |
| Furnace replacement | $2,800 to $7,500 | Housecall Pro, HVAC pricing |
| Central AC replacement | $5,000 to $12,000 | Housecall Pro, HVAC pricing |
| Plumbing repair | $100 to $600 (common repairs) | Housecall Pro, plumbing pricing |
| Water heater replacement | $900 to $3,000 (average $1,400) | Fixr, water heater installation |
| Roofing repair | $400 to $1,900 (average $1,150) | Fixr, roof repair |
| Electrical service call | $176 to $327 per visit | Fixr, electrician |
| Garage door repair | $150 to $600 | Housecall Pro, garage door price guide |
| Pest control (one-time service) | $100 to $300 | Housecall Pro, pest control prices |
Ranges are as published by each source on the date we read it. Repair rows are the typical ticket for the repair call itself, so a call that turns into a replacement can be worth more.
Why callers are hard to win back. In a survey Moneypenny commissioned of 300 micro businesses plus a review of call data from 10,000 businesses (published November 21, 2016), 69% of callers answered by voicemail hung up without leaving a message. That survey is older and covers small businesses in general, not only trades.
For labor context, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $61,010 (about $29.33 per hour) for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers in May 2025.
What to do with your number: compare the cost of answering every call
If the calculator shows more at risk each month than it costs to cover the phone, covering the phone is the cheaper choice. The common options, from cheapest to most complete:
- Voicemail and a callback. Free, but in the Moneypenny survey above, 69% of callers who reached voicemail hung up without leaving a message.
- Missed call text back. An automatic text goes out seconds after a missed call, so the caller has a reply before they dial the next shop. See missed call text back for contractors.
- Human answering service. Live answers, usually priced per minute or per call. Ask whether they can book jobs or only take messages.
- AI front desk for contractors. Answers every call 24/7, tells callers it is an AI assistant, books the job, texts back missed calls and sends the owner a summary. Riot Digital's Front Desk is $497 setup (or $0 with a 3-month commitment) plus $397/mo, up to 500 call minutes. See pricing.
Sample break-even (sample numbers): at a $350 average job, $397 a month is covered by a little over one extra booked job a month.

Methodology
- Date checked: every source in the table was opened and read on October 22, 2026.
- Sources: published home service cost guides (Housecall Pro, Fixr) and, for the caller behavior fact and the wage context, Moneypenny and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. We did not use pages we could not open, and we did not use statistics that did not name where they came from.
- Ranges: copied exactly as each source states them. We did not blend sources or round. Where a source gave an average, it is shown in brackets.
- Midpoints: the calculator prefill is the arithmetic midpoint of each range (for example, $150 to $450 gives $300). The electrical midpoint of $251.50 is shown as $252.
- Limits: the ranges are national, not specific to Minnesota or Wisconsin. Local prices, winter demand and emergency or after-hours rates can differ. Guides update their numbers, so check the linked page for the current figure.
- What this is not: the figures are job prices, not a measure of how many missed calls turn into booked work. The booking rate in the calculator is an input you choose.
FAQ
How much does one missed call cost a contractor?
It depends on the trade and on how many callers would have booked. Using the ranges above, a missed pest control call is tied to a job of about $100 to $300, while a missed furnace replacement call is tied to a job of $2,800 to $7,500. Not every missed call would have booked, which is why the calculator asks for a booking rate.
How many booked jobs does it take to cover an answering service?
With the sample numbers above ($350 average job), a little over one extra booked job a month covers $397. Put your own average ticket into the calculator to see yours.
Do callers leave voicemail?
Often they do not. The Moneypenny survey above found 69% of callers answered by voicemail hung up without leaving a message. That is one survey from 2016, so use it as a data point and not as a rule for your business.
Are these Minnesota and Wisconsin prices?
No. They are national ranges, because we did not find state-specific pages we could open and link. Colder-climate heating work, seasonal peaks and local labor costs may push your numbers up or down.
